United Nations appoints Ambassador Gill as an Envoy on Technology

In their article in the publication “Remaking the World: Toward an Age of Global Enlightenment”, Boston Global Forum (BGF) CEO Nguyen Anh Tuan and Harvard Professor Thomas Patterson wrote:

Optimism marked the 1945 convening of the United Nations in the aftermath of the world’s deadliest war. The UN Charter charged the organization with maintaining international peace and security, protecting human rights, delivering humanitarian aid, promoting sustainable development, and upholding international law. The United Nations has worked in all these areas, and has accomplished much, but even its greatest admirers would acknowledge that it has fallen short of the hopes that marked its creation. The period leading to the UN’s centennial in 2045 is a time to ask how the UN can be strengthened. How can our common humanity be promoted? Such questions were in the forefront at the founding of the UN. That the questions remain important speaks to the challenge of remaking the world. But it also speaks to the need for a redoubled effort as the UN advances toward its centennial year.”

BGF has always seen the promise of technological advance, and vigilance to its possible pitfalls, as key to that effort. Which is why we are delighted by the appointment by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres of an Envoy on Technology. “A thought leader on digital technology (Ambassador Amandeep Singh Gill) brings to the position a deep knowledge of digital technologies coupled with a solid understanding of how to leverage the digital transformation responsibly and inclusively for progress on the Sustainable Development Goals.”
