Governor Michael Dukakis has been a beacon of inspiration and leadership throughout my journey over the past decade. His warm welcome letter in July 2011, shortly after I arrived in Boston, was my first encounter with the man who would become a cherished mentor and dear friend. Just a few months later, in early November 2011, Governor Dukakis delivered a heartfelt welcome speech at a Music and Dinner event organized by the Free For All Concert Fund to honor and welcome me to the vibrant city of Boston.
The real turning point, however, came in November 2012 when, alongside distinguished Harvard professors Thomas Patterson and John Quelch, we co-founded the Boston Global Forum (BGF). With Governor Dukakis at the helm as Chair, we embarked on a journey that would redefine the landscape of global governance and policy dialogues.
One of Governor Dukakis’s most remarkable qualities is his unwavering support for innovative ideas and initiatives. Whether it’s in the realm of cybersecurity or artificial intelligence, he remains open to fresh perspectives and encourages bold thinking. His kindness and approachability have endeared him to countless leaders across the United States, Japan, Europe, India, and beyond.
In November 2017, I presented Governor Dukakis with a novel concept: the creation of a new societal model that leverages advanced AI technologies. This smart society, rooted in principles of humanity, compassion, ethics, and robust governance, aimed to harness the potential of AI for the betterment of humanity. Governor Dukakis not only embraced this vision but actively supported its development. Together, we crafted the AI World Society Initiative (AIWS), which was unveiled during a landmark conference at Harvard University’s Loeb House and Harvard Faculty Club on December 12. Distinguished speakers such as Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, renowned MIT professors Patrick Winston, Max Tegmark, and influential AI researcher Ian Goodfellow, Harvard professor Joseph Nye, among others, joined the conversation with BGF Board Members as professors Nazli Choucri, Thomas Patterson, David Silbersweig, John Savage.
Governor Dukakis leads the charge in creating a Global Enlightenment Community and AIWS City, fostering an environment where compassion, ethics, and vanguard technology converge to address the world’s most pressing challenges. His vision goes beyond borders and seeks to establish a harmonious global society where technology serves humanity.
Furthermore, Governor Dukakis encouraged and supported me to take on the role of editor and co-author of the book “Remaking the World – Toward an Age of Global Enlightenment.”
The book ‘Remaking the World – Toward an Age of Global Enlightenment’ contributes concepts and principles for AI World Society, aiming to create a better world with AI. It is a collaborative effort with the United Nations Academic Impact and is part of the UN Centennial Initiative.
AIWS City: Include distinguished leaders, scholars, and innovators are an integral part of the Global Enlightenment Community. They actively contribute to the practical implementation of the principles and concepts of AI World Society (AIWS) while seamlessly integrating the spiritual and humanitarian values championed by Amma to shape an Age of Global Enlightenment. This collaborative effort thrives in the digital realm, fostering a dynamic online environment where individuals from diverse backgrounds converge to shape the future.
Fast forward to October 3, 2023, when Governor Michael Dukakis, the Boston Global Forum, and the Michael Dukakis Institute honored Amma with the prestigious 2023 World Leader for Peace and Security Award. This recognition underscores Governor Dukakis’s commitment to integrating Amma’s profound spiritual values into the fabric of AI World Society (AIWS), further enriching our mission to create a more enlightened and compassionate world.
Over the past 11 years, I have had the privilege of working closely with Governor Dukakis, who continues to inspire and guide our endeavors. As we move forward into the future, I look forward to many more years of collaboration and learning from this extraordinary leader. Governor Dukakis, you are a true guiding light in our journey toward a better world, and your legacy will continue to illuminate our path.
I also take this moment to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Governor Dukakis on his 90th birthday—a remarkable milestone in a life that has been a true embodiment of dedication and service. From the era of the ‘Massachusetts Miracle’ to pioneering the path to AI World Society – the Age of Global Enlightenment, Governor Dukakis has consistently led the way, shaping a brighter future for us all. I am so grateful for his unwavering guidance, steadfast support, visionary leadership, and cherished friendship throughout the past 12 years. Governor Dukakis has played a pivotal and significant role in my life during my time in Boston, and his influence continues to shape our shared journey toward a better world.
