China is launching a new multi-billion dollar initiative to advance its AI technologies. Private corporations are working with government agencies to start research and projects. At the same time, the United States is cutting back its research funding in the field. Some researchers and policy thinkers believe this is the start of a new race – just one the U.S. hasn’t started running yet. Meanwhile, China is pouring money into the field, including into private U.S. companies researching AI technology.
AIWS was established in order to consider the implications of AI research, including implications for government and public policy. Establishing strong international law in cybersecurity and AI was the theme of our Cybersecurity Day conference on December 12, 2017 at Harvard University and will be an ongoing discussion within AIWS.
